Great forum. My question is this. I have a 1969 White Freight liner COE. I was looking at the front axle hub to check oil level. The hubs should use 85W gear oil or Synthetic gear oil, you can find it anywhere including Walmart. Just remove your front hub caps and tag axle top hats (pull off the decorative lug caps and the rest will come right off). Once done you will see a red cap, its a rubber plug and will pull right out. Recommended Oil Lubrication Specification. Use: Axle hubs with tapered roller bearing. Service Designation: API-GL-5. Viscosity: SAE 80W-90. Pour Point: -18°C (0°F) Maximum. Additives: Corrosion and oxidation inhibitors, foam inhibitors, EP additives. Use type F or Polaris specific oil in the hubs. 80w-90 in the front diff (if you don't have hubs with oil in them then the Hilliard clutch is in the front diff and it takes the Polaris specific oil not 80w-90 mostly on 03 and newer) and if your transmission is like my 2000 magnum there is no dip stick. When adding oil to wheel hubs, follow recommendations of Operator's Manual and always use the same specification as the oil present in wheel hub. Oil will soak brake linings in addition to the danger of wheel loss due to the loss of oil. Drain tip: A hair dryer on 'high' heat setting aimed at the hub helps speed up drain time. Even better is a heat gun, such as the ones used to shrink wraps.
Re: What Oil To Use For Oil Bath Hubs? Yes you can use that The 75w is the weight classification of the oil at room temp and the 90 means it will have the properties of a 90 weight when it heats up. Motor oil is the same ie 5w30 make it easier for the motor to start but when heat and friction starts the oil gets thicker to stick better/longer.
