The headline seasonally adjusted IHS Markit Germany Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index® (PMI®) – a measure of month-on-month changes in total industry activity – registered 54.9 in January, up from December's 53.8. The pace of growth signalled by the index was the second-fastest over the past two years.

Purchasing Managers’ Index™ (PMI™) data are compiled by IHS Markit for more than 40 economies worldwide. The monthly data are derived from surveys of senior executives at private sector companies and are available only via subscription. The IHS Markit Eurozone Construction PMI® is compiled by IHS Markit from responses to questionnaires sent to around 650 construction companies in Germany, France, Italy and Ireland. Survey responses are collected in the second half of each month and indicate the direction of change compared to the previous month. The IHS Markit /CIPS UK Construction PMI® is compiled by IHS Markit from responses to questionnaires sent to purchasing managers in a panel of around 150 construction companies. The panel is stratified by company workforce size, based on contributions to GDP. The IHS Markit/CIPS UK Construction PMI rose to 52.6 in February 2020 from 48.4 in the previous month, easily beating market expectations of 48.8. The latest reading pointed to the steepest pace of expansion in the construction sector since December 2018, as house building activity increased by the most since July 2018 and commercial work output grew for the first time since November 2018. The services PMI™ was introduced in 1996 by IHS Markit’s economists (known as NTC Research at the time) to accompany the existing manufacturing PMI.
